America's Cup 1903 off Sandy Hook
This painting and "Last of the Great Skimming Dishes" depict the America's Cup in 1903, which was held off Sandy Hook, USA. The American yacht Reliance raced the British yacht Shamrock III and won the series. Skimming dish refers to the shallow hull of yachts like Reliance which made them skim across the surface of the water. Reliance was the last of these and the most extreme. After this America's Cup series these yachts were considered too dangerous to continue racing. Oil on board SOLD
