Creating Interiors Around Art

Most of the time, people create an interior first choosing colours and furnishings with little thought as to what will be hung on the walls until the room is complete. Art becomes merely a decorative afterthought. However, I would say that there can be another way of doing things. Why not choose a painting, print or even a sculpture that you love and build your space around it, picking out the colours that drew you to the image and using the mood of the artwork to create an atmosphere that reflects the emotion of the piece back to you.
Maybe you have chosen a picture with moody skies because you liked the blue tones in it, or it evokes a sense of calm that you felt walking in salt laden air along the coast. Perhaps too, the textures captured by the artist inspire you to emulate them in your interior - maybe using the softness of the clouds to choose the fabric for curtains or a sofa. You can use all of this to create a unique interior that is just for you.

This interior works around the beautiful blue sky and the creamy cotton sails of the yachts Mariette and Mariquita. The overall effect is relaxed and calming.

America's Cup painting in room

The bold colours of a striking painting like this one of China Team racing Shosholoza in the America's Cup off Valencia inspires this modern interior. With a rich palette in opposing colours that complement each other, the space is bright and up-lifting, whilst the shiny chair reflects the finish on the yacht hulls as they splash through the water.

concorde painting in room

Here in this interior, the green of the sofa has been chosen to complement the deep greens in the painting. The balance between the two really works without feeling cluttered and draws the eye to the picture.

So, a slightly different way to look at placing art in a room.At the end of the day, the most important thing is to choose what makes you happy and to have fun with creating your own space with artworks that make your heart sing
